The Battle of Stalingrad: Summary
The battle began when the Germans began a heavy bombing campaign on Stalingrad in august. The soviets were outmatched and couldn't do much to prevent the Germans from destroying most of the cities industrial and residential infrastructure. The Germans started there ground assaults on September 13, battled there way through the city, and by November controlled 90% of the city. As a response, the Soviets launched a counter offensive named operation Uranus. The operation was so successful that by November 23, the Soviets had encircled the German army deployed in Stalingrad and caused the German General Paulus to surrender on February 23, 1943
Outcome and Significance of The battle of Stalingrad
The soviet union won the battle of Stalingrad after they surrounded the German General Paulus and his army. the significance of this battle was that it was the turning point of the war for the soviet union because it marked the end of wermacht advances into the USSR and the Red Army began to reconquer Soviet territories that were taken by the Germans since June, 1941.
